If the animation to open an encrypted USB or crate starts but does not finish the game is waiting for a reply back from Steam but not receiving one. In this case you should try one of the two following workarounds:

  • Close the game and restart steam (change users will force Steam to log out) and try again the next time you launch the game
  • To delete your inventorymsgcache subfolder from this location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\ (This has been confirmed to work for many users. - However if possible we would like to know the file names and sizes of the files in that location before and after you delete it via a ticket to help us debug this issue)
  • A steam file refresh
  • Trying to recycle an item (please only attempt to recycle an item you do not want - THIS IS NOT REVERSIBLE - but is confirmed to be working by many users)

To perform a Steam File Refresh please follow these instructions (NOTE - WE HAVE REPORTS THIS IS NO LONGER WORKING FOR MANY/MOST PEOPLE):

Windows XP/Vista/7/8
  • Completely exit the Steam client
  • Open the run dialogue by pressing windows key + r (you can also navigate here from the start menu by typing run).
  • Type steam://flushconfig then press enter. (If asked to allow this website to open a program, please click Allow or OK).
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now, launch Steam directly from the installation folder, not from a pre-existing shortcut (~C:\program files (x86)\Steam).
  • The Steam application will either appear as Steam or Steam.exe depending on whether your settings show file extensions
Manual Steam File Refresh - This may have better luck to force new Steam files to download

  • Completely exit the Steam client
  • Navigate to your base Steam folder
  • Delete all files and folders BUT Steam.exe and your SteamApps folder
  • Relaunch Steam
We are currently investigation this issue with Valve and looking into why it may be happening.

This will also fix many cases where Steam is reporting that it has failed to reach the item server to the game. If the above workarounds do not work for you, please contact Steam Support with this issue.
